Switch power supplies, fans and temperature
SZ-MCP reads every online ICX switch’s power supplies, fans and temperature sensors every 15 minutes and stores them as five metrics per switch, covering every unit of a stack. Three starter rules turn them into alerts that recover when the hardware does, which SmartZone’s own power-supply and fan alarms don’t.
This needs API polling. The readings come from the 15-minute part of the metric poll, which is off until an admin turns on the API polling switch (Configure › Data collection › Metrics card). With polling off there are no readings, and the three rules stay quiet.
What metrics are there?
Section titled “What metrics are there?”| Metric | Meaning |
|---|---|
switch_psus | Power supplies present, on every stack unit. An empty slot is not counted |
switch_psus_failed | Power supplies present whose status is not OK |
switch_fans | Fans present; 0 on a fanless model |
switch_fans_failed | Fans present whose status is not OK |
switch_temperature_celsius | The hottest temperature sensor on the switch, on any stack unit |
A status of OK, Normal or Good counts as OK; a status saying the slot is
not present, absent, empty or not installed is left out; any other status
counts as failed. A slot reported twice counts once, at its worse state.
Ask Claude, for example “Which switches have a failed power supply or fan?” or “Chart the hottest switch temperature in each IDF over the last week.”
How are they read?
Section titled “How are they read?”One call covers every online switch. Every 15 minutes the poll sends
SwitchM POST /health/status/all, plus GET /stack/member/{id} for each
online stack (up to 100) to tell which switch a stack member’s serial belongs to.
Offline switches report nothing, so they have no new readings; the
switch-offline starter rule covers them. A unit whose serial matches no known
switch is skipped.
Which starter rules use them?
Section titled “Which starter rules use them?”Three starter rules:
| Rule | Fires on | State |
|---|---|---|
switch-psu-failed | switch_psus_failed of 1 or more | CRITICAL at once, repeats every 4 h |
switch-fan-failed | switch_fans_failed of 1 or more | CRITICAL at once, repeats every 4 h |
switch-temperature-high | The hottest sensor’s 15-minute average over 75 °C (WARNING) or 85 °C (CRITICAL) | After 2 checks |
How do these differ from SmartZone’s own alarms?
Section titled “How do these differ from SmartZone’s own alarms?”These rules recover when the hardware does; SmartZone’s power-supply and fan
alarms never clear. SmartZone raises alarm 20000 (Power supply failure), 20001
(Fan failure) and 20004 (Temperature above threshold warning), all Critical.
The sz-alarm-critical starter rule picks them up and stays CRITICAL until
SmartZone clears the alarm, so after a PSU is replaced only
switch-psu-failed goes back to OK.
For temperature, alarm 20004 fires at the switch’s own per-model threshold.
switch-temperature-high uses fixed thresholds of 75 °C and 85 °C, so it can
catch a room warming up before the switch’s threshold is reached. Tune them
with Claude (alerts.update_rule) for your models.
To find which slot failed, Claude can call POST /health/status/all itself
through switches.call.
